UCC-12 formally known as UPC-A
UCC-12 is a 12-digit number composed of a UCC Company Prefix, an Item Reference, and a Check Digit.

When UCC-12 numbers are stored in the GTIN format, positions one and two are implied zeros.
N (Positions 3 - 13) is a unique number consisting of two parts: an EAN.UCC Company Prefix assigned by the UCC or EAN International to a member company, and an Item Reference assigned by the member company to a product.
C is a Check Digit.

Variable length UCC Company Prefixes are issued with some new UCC-12 Identification Numbers. Based on a new member's need for capacity to identify their Trade Items, the UCC will vary the length of the UCC Company Prefix from six to eleven positions, depending on the Trade Item numbering requirements of new UCC members. The introduction of variable length prefixes will not impact current members who already have and use their UCC Company Prefixes. The numbers and symbols they have created or will create using their currently assigned UCC Company Prefix will continue to be unique everywhere in the world. Printing of bar codes will also be unaffected. |

No later than year 2005, systems must be able to process a minimum of 13 digits at POS. It is strongly recommended to expand all internal databases to accept the full 14-digit GTIN format for ordering, shipping, and receiving. |
