When UCC-12 numbers are stored in the GTIN format, positions one and two are implied zeros.
N (Positions 3 - 13) is a unique number consisting of two parts: an EAN.UCC Company Prefix assigned by the UCC or EAN International to a member company, and an Item Reference assigned by the member company to a product.
C is a Check Digit.

Variable length UCC Company Prefixes are issued with some new UCC-12 Identification Numbers. Based on a new member's need for capacity to identify their Trade Items, the UCC will vary the length of the UCC Company Prefix from six to eleven positions, depending on the Trade Item numbering requirements of new UCC members. The introduction of variable length prefixes will not impact current members who already have and use their UCC Company Prefixes. The numbers and symbols they have created or will create using their currently assigned UCC Company Prefix will continue to be unique everywhere in the world. Printing of bar codes will also be unaffected.

No later than year 2005, systems must be able to process a minimum of 13 digits at POS. It is strongly recommended to expand all internal databases to accept the full 14-digit GTIN format for ordering, shipping, and receiving.
| Company Number |
| The Company Number is a number allocated by the UCC or an EAN International Number Organization. |
| Item Reference |
| The Item Reference is a unique number assigned and controlled by the member company. The Item Reference should be unique for each consumer package and/or shipping container. |
| Check Digit |
| A Check Digit is a single digit used to verify the accuracy of the entire UCC-12 . When scanned, the Check Digit helps the scanning system verify that it has correctly read the bar code. The Check Digit is always the last character on the right of a UCC-12. |
| UPC-E |
UPC-E (Universal Product Code-E) is also fixed length and is a compressed six digit code used for marking small packages including magazines and paperback books. The printed value of the UPC-E code is a twelve digit code. UPC-E symbols are UPC-A symbols that have been zero suppressed (i.e. consecutive zeros are not included in the symbol). The nominal height for the UPC-E bar code is one inch.
